Rachel and Jared’s Kitchen

Rachel & Jaz

On my first meeting with Rachel, she spoke about doing a cosmetic update to the kitchen – just changing the colours of the doors and benchtops. But after speaking with her for about an hour and hearing Rachel talk about how the kitchen layout was so frustrating, it became obvious to us both that the conversation needed to be about a full kitchen renovation instead!

With Rachel and Jared and their two young children under the age of 3, the kitchen really wasn’t up to handling the demands of busy family life or relaxed entertaining with friends. The layout was awkward, disorganised, dark and old-fashioned for this young family. And there definitely wasn’t anything in this kitchen that reflected the personality of either the family or the style of home they were trying to create.

The house, about 30 years old, was a confusing mixture of Mediterranean with its terracotta tiles, and Country with the timber window / door frames, timber floors and timber benchtops. It just wasn’t a cohesive look and felt really outdated.

Kitchen Brief

A full kitchen renovation to create a highly functional and well-laid-out kitchen that addresses awkward storage and layout.

The existing footprint HAD to remain the same, as they weren’t ready to re-sand and finish the solid timber floorboards.

Important for ample storage to be achieved along with incorporating easy to use storage solutions.

Jaz loves doing his own meat smoking, so we needed to include an area in the kitchen that was dedicated to him.

Rachel hated the centre island bench as it was never used and felt in the way, but as the footprint had to stay the same, the centre bench had to remain.

The kitchen was an older style, looking “heavy” and darkened the hub of the home, so finishes that will lighten the space were important to the overall look to be achieved.

Consider the flow of the home from the entry, through the large hallway, and into the open plan main living room with kitchen and dining. These spaces were not cohesive and nor did they make good use of the available space for the needs of a growing family.

Kitchen Style & Colour Palette
I wanted to create a modern farmhouse feel in the home, taking advantage of the beautiful solid timber floorboards as the foundation for the style.

On acreage in Warner on the Northside of Brisbane and surrounded by gum trees, I decided on a colour palette of soft greens and natural beige tones to complement the country vibe for this kitchen renovation.

Light, bright and calming – a colour direction that would brighten up the hub of the home and create a relaxed, homely feel.

Adding some texture into the cabinetry finishes adding to the country feel.

Kitchen Design
Flat panel melamine doors and drawers were used to provide ease of maintenance with young children.

Engineered stone benchtops for ease of cleaning, in a neutral colour and polished finish – practical and made the space feel less “heavy”.

The handle hardware I selected, a combination of brown leather and brass finishes, a bit of a masculine touch for Jaz, and the wear of the leather over time adding to that farmhouse feel.

The kitchen layout required improved organisation by creating zones for the different functions of the kitchen and decreasing clutter.

Positioning of the sink, dishwasher, cooktop, oven, food prep areas and tea and coffee zones needed to be completely reworked to achieve a more efficient workflow.

By moving the cooktop to the rear bench behind the “awkward” centre island bench, the previously unused bench was given a really practical purpose – food prep for cooking as well as a convenient place for plating up food straight from the cooktop. Rachel was thrilled with this!

We increased the main island benchtop space and added Jaz’s meat prep station next to the sink and adjacent to the huge Blum Servo Drive bin.

We also incorporated a breakfast/tea/coffee station and bar area – also with Blum Servo Drive cabinet doors.

An additional study area at the end of the kitchen was created, with a desktop and storage for the children to sit at to have morning or afternoon tea and do arts, crafts and homework.

Their Feedback

Read what Rachel & Jaz had to say about their experience working with me …

“My wife or myself didn’t have the time to arrange a kitchen renovation with work and a young family.

So, we looked for a designer and Verona stood out.

We hired her for our job and….. WOW, she was great to deal with. Verona listened to us, gave us lots of information, which was great, and gave us ideas on things we hadn’t even thought about. She ran the whole show – from drawings, selections, quotes and dealing with trades. The design concepts and drawings she provided were very important. We love our new kitchen and mudroom – there’s plenty of storage and everything now has an easy flow.

We were very happy with Verona and would recommend to anyone we know to use Avid Interior Design for their renovation project.”

Rachel and Jared’s Mudroom

The Brief was to create not only a beautiful entry into the home, but also to incorporate practical storage and a functional area for the children to get ready for school or come home and unpack their school bags. I suggested including a barn door as an ideal way to zone off the main entry from the mudroom, providing a practical yet stylish means to separate the two spaces and still in keeping with the overall look and feel of the home.

Emilia’s Story

The brief was to create a stylish, modern, yet homely apartment with hints of mid-century modern elements. Providing additional storage that was functional and attractive was also important to Emelia. It was important to open up the kitchen so that it felt more connected to the living room, with a “must have” being to remove the ugly, outdated arch into the kitchen. Every room in the apartment needed to be completely redesigned.

Mark & Shauna’s Story

Transform the existing obsolete spaces into a relaxing retreat and master suite, using clean lines, a soft, muted colour palette and create a sense of calm and luxury.

The plan is to create a cohesive retreat with an adjacent sitting/living room – where together, these spaces provide a relaxing space to unwind after a busy day, and and the master suite can be closed off for additional privacy.
